The Passionate Shepherd to His Love

Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountain yields.

And we will sit upon rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.

And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant poises,
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle;

A gown made of the finest wool
Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
Fair lined slippers for the cold,
With buckles of the purest gold;

A belt of straw and ivy buds,
With coral clasps and amber studs;
And if these pleasures may thee move,
Come live with me, and be my love.

The shepherds's swains shall dance and sing
For thy delight each May morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me and be my love.

Christopher Marlowe

I wish

I wish I could go on a walk.
I wish I didn't have to think so much either.
I wish things didn't matter so much sometimes.
I wish I was a teapot instead of a blue flame.

I wish I could rhyme and write a song.
I wish I could do the lemonade with the lemons I got.
I wish I wasn't afraid.
I wish I was a flower and not a weed.

I really wish I could go on a walk
I wish I could be someone else sometimes
I wish I didn't wish a thing
I wish I remembered right now that on a daily basis
I just don´t wish for much...

Science

I just found out what´s wrong with me. I just found out I´m addicted to you, for real, literally.

This was written on May 1sth 2012. It´s been in my drafts for two yeas now. It made me think that I should make a tag called "this was me a year ago" even though this wasnt a year ago.... the idea is that for some reason I didnt say these things when I thought about them and now years after that I think it should b out there even if it´s just a symbolic thing bc it´s just me and me over here. Today´s May 5th, I was wondering if I had a draft from that date but no, there is a may1st, this one, a may 4th and a May 6th so I´ll just post the first one and next time I feel like posting some of my drafts I´ll post whatever is closes to the date I feel like posting it

Through my eyes: About ghosts and nightmares II

A/N: after the last one this one´s really short.... but... I think it´s perfect this way, the other half like that, bigger and this one smaller

“Love me when I least deserve it,
Because that´s when I really need it.”

~Swedish proverb

Air, I needed air. Air...
I couldn’t breath
“Breath” through the fog I heard a voice

“Hey, Josh, hey –Nichole´s voice right next to me- breath” she placed both her hands on my face, I wanted to breath, I just couldn’t, water was everywhere.
“Hey, hey, look, at me – she made us lock gazes- it’s ok, you’re not drowning. I’ve got you” she smiled that half smile of hers and a memory I didn’t know I had showed itself loud and clear before my blinking eyes.

I forced myself to search in my jacket´s pocket but I didn’t find what I was looking for, I was losing focus, rain and blackness closing on me just like my throat. Nichole´s voice telling me I was in her house, that she´d pull me out, to breath kept going further away. Before I could black out completely, I felt my body inhaled so deeply that my shoulders rose high as I felt the usual itching in my nose whenever I inhale the quick relief asthma medication as it opened my throat and then I gasped, started to feel jittery like I always did, probably had palpitations but since I had have those before I couldn’t tell.

Once the need to breath had been taken care of the embarrassment overwhelmed me completely. It was bigger than my anger and my questions and even for a moment worse than the rain. I opened my mouth, no words came out, although I still was having a hard time to breathe I knew the spray that somehow Nichole had managed to find in my jacket and made me breath wouldn’t let my throat close. I looked away until I saw Nichole´s hand raised, almost as high as my face I looked at her then at her hand still raised like when you are about to high five. Very slow I touched my hand to her, like in my memory, the palms of our hands touching through the glass but there wasn’t any glass. I stared at our hands, my mind taking me to that time, a little girl crying in front of me. She moved her fingers between mine and held my hand and being as unpredictable as always, pulled me to her in some awkward hug.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry” she whispered against my hair. I just focused in breathing. The rain picked up.
“It rained the next day and the next day and on the funerals too…” I said as if continuing the last thing I had said
“I know… I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you” her voice faltered, I didn’t say a word, I don’t think I would´ve been able to say anything. She held me and I let her, my anger had left me, my heart pounded.

“I´m sorry I shouted…” after a little while I sat up, I wasn’t panting anymore, my mind a little calmer, just a tad, at least the world wasn’t made of water anymore. She shook her head.
“I deserved it” she said barely above a whisper with a sigh. Suddenly I was not only ashamed for letting her see one of my panic attacks but for acting irrationally. I had seen two deaths, felt in danger and been abandoned when I was seventeen, one month, a few months at most. It was terrible but in truth I had my family, I had lived well, I had been loved all my life, I had been safe, I had a home, I belonged whereas Nichole´s life had been plagued with tragedy since before she was born, she witnessed the same deaths I did that March three years ago but she´d also witnessed so many. She was abandoned, alone, without a family to protect her and those who should´ve protect and love her hurt and used her.

My mom and dad had taken care of everything regarding Alexander, the money, house where he died, the police, the funeral…I only know she got the responsibility of the business with my father that couldn’t be easy… sure it was bad to have just left but she´d been alone too. I wish she could´ve trust me to have been there but maybe I would’ve just gotten crazy like I had just done, blacking out… who´d want that on top of everything else?

“Are you tired? –Nichole whispered- do you want to lie down? It might take a while for the rain to stop” she looked out the window. I sighed exhausted but I knew sleep wouldn’t come.

“Come on” almost a whisper, our hands still locked, she took me out and around again, upstairs through another flight of stairs, pictures of places on the way up. I kept focusing on my breathing, in a day like this, the anniversary of my grandfather´s death it was particularly challenging to endure such a hard storm. Breathing was basically all I could do as we walked slowly through the long hallway. Nichole took me to a guest room.

“Mii´s across the hall… I´ll check on her” she left. I lay on the bed, on my side as I listened to rain still surrounding everything. I didn’t turn the lights off. Instead of focusing on the rain I started to think of that new old memory. It was probably the reason why I knew how to differentiate Nichole´s true smile. I had seen that tiny half smile when I was at my worst. I had heard that “hey, hey, look at me” but coming from a little girl. Until today I had never heard her voice. “Don’t be afraid, you’re here, you’re safe” in her small child-like voice. “Shhh, there, there” maybe her mom cooed this when she cried.

She came back after a little while, less than five minutes, the door was opened; I was staring at the ceiling when she came back after what felt like five minutes, the door had been left opened. From the corner of my eye I could see the painting of some random forest as she entered with hesitation.
“Are you ok?” she asked with a small voice. I considered this. I was mostly angry, angry and tired. I had been angry at her but I wasn’t anymore, I felt sad for her. I was angry at Alexander and Karl and Natasha and that woman with the journal but they were not important, I was angry that their influence affected my life and her life in such a heart-wrenching way. She became a fugitive while I got paralyzed by some stupid fear. I was thinking too much, taking too long to reply. I shook my head and wondered if she´d see and if she did what she’d do next.

“I´m reminded of the New Year´s I spent with you. Both of us waiting for the other to fall asleep” she walked in and sat on the edge of the bed. Despite myself, I smiled only with the side of my mouth. She´d told me then that maybe I could make good memories of rainy days, just what I had used when I insisted in bringing her back to my life; it had been what broke her arguments then. During that New Year´s she’d promised to look for the little girl, to find her and now here I was with her.
“I fell asleep first” I sighed
“Mh… it was raining the first time you stayed in my room and wore one of my pjs” some humor in her voice. I snorted. I remembered
“Had to use your shampoo”
“It rained a little when you picked me up when I visited you” she was telling me, I guessed good memories of rainy days, although they fell so distant, so lost
“I drove” I said, Aaron had smiled when he saw us holding hands. It had been the time when he´d told me he´d stop flirting with her.
“Yeah…  Did it rain on my birthday?” she asked, I tried to remember, despite the rain sounds, I was getting sleepy, my eyelids felt heavy, it was surprising but maybe not, I hadn’t sleep more than a few hours in the past days
“I don’t remember –I said- did it?”
“Not the main event –a smile in her voice, I knew this Nichole, she sounded like my friend, like the little girl- You had an umbrella, once, for me, so that I didn’t get wet” she continued, I remembered that, I had waited for her, it had been hard but it was just a drizzle and then after that I could endure more, it had been like practice.
“You didn’t use it”

“I like rain”
“You spun around under the rain” I saw her back then spinning under the rain with her half smile and her head slightly tilted up to the sky like a movie in the back of my eyelids
“You thought I´d get sick”
“Yeah” my eyes had closed
“Go to sleep”
“…” I blinked my eyes opened
“I’ll stay here for a bit…” her voice was barely audible. My eyes closed, did that make it better?
“Do you play the piano?” I mumbled
“Mh?”
“There’s a piano…” I don’t know why it was such an important question for me

“Ah, no, I can’t play but mom always wanted one…I think…” I don’t know what else she said, I was gone.

Through my eyes: About ghosts and nightmares

A/N: This is a very long two-part post. I actually read it twice once again but I´m sure there are many more mistakes than ever before ha!
Also this one comes with a song, I think it´s kinda like the post. The song is Silence by Lucia. Ah, there is another song mentioned: Toccata and Fugue (that part was funny haha)
I decided to include a quote that I really like and that as soon as I saw it I knew it was perfect for this post, it also made me remember one of my writing teachers: Ada, she was so strict when it came to grammar and stuff hahaha she´d give me a bad grade for this post lol (we had a writing blog for that class, she graded our posts) One think that she said was that we should start our writings in an intersting way and one interesting way was to use quotes or some little phrase before the main thing. I have a couple of other quotes for this story.
I had to fight Josh to let me write this one but once I started I couldnt finish!

“Love me when I least deserve it,
Because that´s when I really need it.”
~Swedish proverb

The three hours and thirty minutes to Crystals house were done in silence; only the whistling of the wind against the car as we went through the empty street gave any indication that we were moving at all.  We were going fast, I had glanced at the speedometer a couple of times but in no way I felt uncomfortable about it, I didn’t think about it at all… I knew Camille had been asleep for about an hour but at the time I didn’t want to risk saying anything. My anger was still there below my shock of seeing people I thought I’d never see again and of doing things I didn’t think I´d ever do.

I hadn’t thought I’d see Crystals house again, not that day, not ever. It was strange, like seeing a ghost. That place where I had celebrated my birthday and had found Nichole not knowing she owned the place… thinking she’d come for my party, finding out she was there for her sister, it was the same, she was her for her sister.

“Do you want me to carry her inside?” I offered once we parked just outside the front double doors.
“No, it´s ok, she’ll wake up anyway… -Nichole told me just above a whisper- Camille, baby –she shook Camille lightly- we’re home” she cooed. The younger girl blinked, yawned, stirred and got out of the car hugging her arms around herself. She walked inside like someone used to this routine. Nichole and I followed with our backpacks.

The last time I had been there the entrance and living room had been emptied, it had been some kind of dance floor now there were couches, tables, plants, vases with flowers, paintings, a big mirror and even a piano all of it lit by soft yellow lights and perfumed by the smell of the white flowers and roses that filled the bases on some of the tables. Roses and …maybe they were the ones Camille had said were her favorite. I wondered vaguely what were Marissa’s favorite flowers, what were Nichole´s…

“Take a seat, please, I’ll be back in a while” Nic followed her sister who was already going upstairs. When Nic talked to me Camille stopped and turned around with slightly flushed cheeks
“I´m sorry –Camille said sleepily- I had forgotten you were coming”
“Don’t worry –I smiled- good night Camille”
“Good night, Josh, thank you for coming and keeping us company” she smiled sleepily and continued going up

“Do you remember where the kitchen is? –Nic pointed to the archway at my right- take anything you want from there. I´ll be back in a while” she said again. She seemed anxious with that little wrinkle between her eyebrows. I nodded. I saw them until they disappeared as they went up and then I sighed and turned around. It was all silence except for distant crickets and perhaps frogs somewhere… it sounded like Burgeoys at night; it felt familiar but not comforting at the time.

I sat alone for a couple of minutes in the empty place, with how silent it all was you could say I was all alone in a ghost house.  All the lights had been on as if the house was waiting for us, I half expected the piano to start playing itself on its own at any second and then I laughed at the absurdity of my thoughts; a house as big as Crystals house would need a lot of people to keep it, that people left the lights on and put the flowers. “Invisible servants” I muttered Marissa´s words and continued waiting until after a minute or two I grew anxious. I checked my phone; I had a text from Marissa, one from Aaron and one from my mom.

Marissa wished me good night and to feel better; I had texted her that I wasn’t going to make it to movie night, that I was sorry and that we´d talk tomorrow. I was very glad that she and I didn´t need to know all the reasons all the things the other was doing when we were not together. I was immensely grateful for her understanding personality. Aaron asked where I was and mom said thanks for the flowers. I didn’t reply two of the three texts.
“I´m fine” I texted Aaron
“Drunk? I could join you” he texted a couple of minutes later as if he had been expecting my reply
“Not drunk” I replied
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure” I texted
“Call me if you need anything”
“I will” I replied. He was with our parents; I knew he´d let them know I was ok. I knew he’d keep his phone close just in case I decided I wanted him with me, I was glad about that, more than I could ever tell him. He wouldn’t let me if I wanted just like I don’t let him have to thank me for help. Helping the other is a given for us.

I waited for several minutes and then I just had to do something, anything. I had the strange desire to go to the piano and play it, maybe to play Toccata and Fugue just because that´s how eerie it was to be there. I could almost picture Karl and Alexander walking through the double doors I had crossed a while ago. I had met Karl Duchene only once before witnessing his death. He hadn’t been particularly creepy or disturbing. He had been just a man in a suit, he hadn’t look particularly threatening either, just like any other chairman or CEO, like many I had met before, like many of my dad´s friends, maybe even like my dad or Alexander, one of those men that knows how much his word is worth, how much his time is worth.

When I had seen him, both times, he had worn casual clothes, no tie, intense gaze, no smile but the first time he’d projected a friendly aura, shaking both Aaron and my hand with a firm grip. The second time I had seen him his gaze had been fierce, decided… unapologetic and though he was dying, still, commanding. I could almost feel the man there, walking through the halls alone as he plotted my death maybe with a smile similar to his daughter’s.

In that ghostly house it was also so easy to picture Alexander, not my grandpa, there was no way I could picture my grandpa as the man that had died that day, no, Alexander, the mad scientist, was another person entirely. That Alexander with those cold eyes unlike anything I had seen before, a scowl distorting his face that to me had always been gentle and wise. Hate in his face as he had steadily aimed a gun to another person. The intention to kill had been clear in his gaze. Until that day I had no idea that he knew how to shoot a weapon or that he owned one. Cold eyes were the last thing I had seen of him before he’d closed them as the bullet bit deep in his head. I hoped my eyes, so much like his, never had that look in them. Alexander and Karl had been so similar, too similar…

Instead of playing that piano and instead of keeping with the idea that Karl and Alexander belonged in that house, I ventured to the kitchen. I went through the living room and then another living room and another room and then to my right I saw the dining room, across it a door with a window in the shape of a circle, it was the kitchen. I clearly remembered the first time I had been there. Nichole had wanted cake and I had tricked my twin so that she and I went outside on our own. She´d wanted to be with me but without him. I had enjoyed the silence that we often shared back then.

I opened the fridge and took a bottle of water, there wasn´t much food, perhaps enough for the weekend, some already cooked and placed in transparent food containers. “Invisible servants” I muttered again, perhaps because it was a distraction from my older memories. I looked around the kitchen as I sat on one of the tall stools on the other side of the kitchen island. When I had been there for the first time the kitchen had been the one place where there was a picture of Nichole´s mother. That had changed; as I had gone by the other rooms I had seen pictures of her, pictures and paintings. She and Camille had the same amount of pictures around, I couldn’t see any of Karl, Sheryl or Nichole but I hadn’t really paid attention to the smaller ones.

Nichole came to find me in the kitchen. She was now wearing a t-shirt and a sweater, no shoes only her black socks. I noticed she kept that old habit; she´d never wore anything but dark clothes, except the school uniform which required us to wear a white shirt under our burgundy blazer but even then she was always wearing her black gloves and black leggings or tights or stocking or whatever those were.
“I´m sorry… I waited for Camille to fall asleep again” Nichole said somewhat nervously. I didn’t speak; I only stared at her, trying to make sense of what I had seen during the afternoon, of what I was seeing then.
“The study –she said opening the fridge and taking two water bottles- we´ll talk there” I stood up and waited for her to lead the way. I wondered if she was going to try to do something to distract me from my questions, from honoring her word. There in her house, in the middle of nowhere it wouldn’t matter if I shouted or accused her of anything, if she didn’t want to talk she wouldn’t and there would be nothing I could do about it.

Nic turned off the lights of the rooms we crossed; we went back to the first living room and passed it by, she turned off those lights too, there were a couple of doors and it felt like we circled the place before she opened a door to her left, got inside and turned on the lights. The room had shelves filled with books and some pictures I couldn’t make up. At the back of the room there was a big desk, behind it a huge window partially covered by red curtains. On a side there was a fire place and in the middle there was a lounge chair, an arm chair and a rocking chair that didn’t match the rest but I didn’t comment on that.  I sat on the arm chair as she closed the door. I glanced at the clock above the door, it was ten to eleven. Nichole sat in front of me, looked at me for a moment as I looked back at her but she didn’t say anything, neither of us said a word for a long time.

“Do you live here too?” I broke the tense silence. I had wanted to ask “who are you?” instead.
“No, but I come sometimes. It´s mine now” perhaps she thought of the time we saw each other there when she denied this was her. It was her fathers and that, to her, didn’t mean it was hers.
“You have a lot of houses now” I’m not sure why I said that
“So do you” she stated. I only had one house… well, my parents’ house, the place where I lived for school, the log house I used… technically there was grandpa´s house too, I nodded reluctantly

“Why do you avoid me so much now?” I asked after another moment in silence; it was obvious she wasn’t planning to say a thing if I didn’t ask. We’d spent some time alone back in Burgeoys and pretty much everywhere we went but it had never felt so tense.
“You don’t want a friend like me” she said and my anger resurfaced. No, I didn’t want that person, no. I huffed. Had she been that person all along and I had just met the mask, I thought- that couldn’t be.

“You said answers…” I shook my head lightly. I wanted to know what had happened three years ago
“Yes” she nodded
“What happened three years ago?” I asked, she opened her mouth “No –I interrupted- no –I closed my eyes- I saw you a Saturday, we visited Ashley… was that goodbye?” I had always wondered if she’d planned that, if that´s why she’d told me how he’d died.
“No” she said softly
“Why did you take me?”
“I wanted you to know… him, to know me; I guess I wanted you to see me…” a tiny wrinkle on her forehead
“To push me away in some other way?” I said dryly
“No, to beg you to be careful” she looked into my eyes; she looked calmed, I didn’t feel calmed at all, how did she do that?
“What happened… if that wasn’t goodbye… you totally left without one”
“I know”
“Why? Wasn’t I meaningful enough for that?” I raised my eyebrow
“I knew –she sighed- I knew Natasha would go to you, I didn’t want her to have a reason to hurt you, she’d have known if you lied, you couldn’t know…”
“I wouldn’t have told her anything” I shook my head. She hadn’t trust me, not enough, that hurt back then and I found out that it kept hurting.
“I know –she smiled weakly- but she would´ve known you knew, you’re a bad liar…”
“So, not being a proficient liar is bad?” I spat
“No, of course not, it´s great… but I didn’t want her to hurt you” you expect to get some kind of change in the other person´s voice when yours change but Nichole´s voice remained steady and calmed. Rehearsed? Faked? That thoroughly annoyed me.
“She kidnapped me anyway” my jaw clenched. I had seen a few hours earlier the woman that had kidnapped me and had gotten away with it as if it had meant nothing. Back then, her ring had cut my cheek; it had constantly reminded me that I had been taken against my will and that no justice had been made.
“I know –she closed her eyes for a second- and I´m sorry about that”
“It could’ve been avoided if you had said anything, something” I reproached, she looked down to her lap
“Maybe…” her voice grew quiet, changing for the first time. I wanted to make her say I was right but there was no way to know for sure if I was actually right. I sighed in frustration
“You called me once and told me not to contact you… did you already know…?”  Who I was and my part in your strange ability was the unsaid part. My heart raced a little, I wanted to know the answer but at the same time I didn’t want to.
“No” she said at once and shook her head as if to make it clear
“Then what made you leave? I don’t understand…”
“I told you I´d see Camille that next day –she looked at me in question, I nodded letting her know I remembered- ah, Natasha was supposed to take Camille to see me… they never came. I was mad. I had gone out of Burgeoys very early and she just cancelled –she shrugged, her lips becoming a thin line-… somehow the journal fell out of my bag, I saw a picture and I just read the journal, a part of it, the first part, the part about Nat… -she inhaled deeply, quietly- I had asked her many times if she knew how I got this –she showed me her hands- about who I was, maybe with the hope that it could be changed…” she said and it was like a blow to my chest, it was sad, well I had guessed she longed for that to be changed but to hear it in her voice made it an entity of its own.

“She always said she didn’t know anything about it, that she´d always just been the coffee bringer, an assistant without any access to any document –she continued- I knew she lied not just how much… -she sighed and paused studying my face for a second- you know I wanted to leave that year… I just couldn’t take it anymore…”
“You said we’d graduate together…” I reminded her; after everything that had happened I thought that particular promise wasn’t important… every promise is important I heard in the back of my mind.
“I know –she frowned- but you saw what I did; I would´ve kept doing that… I felt terrible doing it and it scared me that someone knew so much about what we did, what I did. I had to stop it. I couldn’t stop it if I stayed”
“If it scared you that I knew going away like that didn’t ensure my silence” I narrowed my eyes
“I knew you wouldn´t use what you knew… and you just said you wouldn’t have said anything” she reminded me
“You didn’t have to tell me not to call you, to ignore me so thoroughly to make it stop either…” I furrowed my eyebrows
“Yes, I did. Nat, like everybody else thought we were together and even if she didn’t, she knew you were my friend –I noticed the word “were”, it hurt- she… -Nic closed her eyes- she checked both your phone records and mine… trying to find me, your brother’s as well…” she looked appalled to tell me this; my eyes were huge and my jaw had dropped.
“What?! How…?”
“She´s good with computers” Nichole shrugged.  We were in silence for a moment. I couldn’t believe just how much that woman had been so informed about my life.
“But you called me, I texted you, I had texted you before, you once or twice did too. Wouldn’t she…?”
“I always erased those records” she looked ashamed
“You what? –I said through gritted teeth- Why? How?” I asked in rapid succession
“That’s why I never gave you my number, it was always traced… when you gave one, well, you didn’t accept my negative –she smiled a little- so I just erased the records between our phones… since the beginning, just in case…” she once again looked embarrassed
“How…?” was she some kind of hacker? I would´ve never guessed that
“Ah… well… I got in the phone company´s computers…”
“You hacked in…?”
“Ah… yeah…” she admitted in a quiet voice
“You can…?” I stopped myself, it shouldn’t surprise me, this girl could kill with her touch why not hack and erase records that weren’t hers… well, half of them at least were hers…

“Did you… did you see everything I texted?” anger, betrayal and alarm in my voice. She shook her head
“I filtered my search between your number and mine, I never saw anything else. I didn’t do it to spy on you just to avoid her and my mess getting to you. I know you probably don’t believe me but it´s true”
“Why didn’t you just tell me?” I growled
“Josh… we were seventeen, you were the first friend I´d had after what felt like a long time, you knew what I did, I didn’t want to have to see the look of terror in your eyes again or … -she scrubbed a hand over her face- or the one of distrust you just gave me…which I deserve I know –I was about to protest, she didn’t let me- I was a freak, a weirdo, everybody knew but you didn’t want to think so, I didn’t want to give you any more reasons for you to start thinking they were right… -she inhaled deeply again-  also the more you knew, the more danger for you” she held my gaze as if trying to convince me, I stared, shut my eyes close and shook my head trying to understand.

“Alright, if you didn’t say goodbye to protect me, if you hacked my phone to protect me, if you severed our friendship to protect me –by then I was talking through gritted teeth- why didn’t you say anything when I was kidnapped? Why I was sent with some thug back to school? Why did you leave me with that murderer when Alexander died?” I noticed I had raised my voice by the end. She drank half of the water bottle, put it on the table between us, tilted her head a little to a side like listening for something
“When I knew –she moved her finger to her mouth as if she was going to bite her nail but she couldn’t do that, she was wearing gloves. She seemed to realize it immediately and proceeded to place her hand on her lap, sat a little straighter, squared her shoulders, lifted her chin up slightly before she continued- whom I was; who you were… I debated what to do about it…” she’d gone back to her calmed ways. I know I was blinking madly because I started to see her cut, like one of those old movies: her image, darkness, her face, darkness again
“…What to do with the information, with … -she sighed- it was mind blowing to find out I had acquired this … -she pursed her lips- ability… and that it was… eh… linked to you. I spent days wondering if you knew; if things would’ve been different if I didn’t have it…. I spent days and nights thinking what it all meant, what to do with what I knew…” her voice had gone quieter as if she was going back to that time. I blinked, what to do, did she mean, kill me, yeah, most likely.

“…But in the end –she continued- you’re, somehow, the only life I ever saved…” she said those words again, she´d said them the time she’d agreed to not avoid me. My life being saved cost so many lives. I felt small and for a second I had wanted to stop her

“So I couldn’t… -she continued- I didn’t want to follow Ibsen or Karl or Nat’s plans, not anymore. At the time, I was the mean for them to get what they wanted, so if I stayed away, if I left, you and your family were safe, safer. I had decided to disappear from everything I was, to start all over again somewhere else, to just forget it all –she shrugged lightly- until Natasha took you… she didn’t know I knew, she had the idea that I’d come for you no matter what… -she sighed- and… well, I thought it was safer, better, for you to go back instead of being there with Nat and me, I was more the danger to you than Nat and I knew the driver wouldn’t harm you”
“There was no way for you to know that!” I raised my voice as I ignored all the rest of the information, starting by the fact that she had debated whether to kill me or not.
“There was an unspoken bargain, your safety for my coming back….”
“What? You trusted Strasberg not to give the order to shoot me?!” I hissed
“No, I didn’t trust her, but I knew her plan, her ways and I sent you with only my driver…”
“And a dagger –I scoffed- the man could’ve had a gun!”
“He didn’t, my drivers weren’t given guns, knives, yes, but I had taken out of the cars before I got in the cabin … I trusted you could defend yourself if he acted but he wouldn’t. He knew what I did, how my other driver had died, he was scared of me… they all thought…they thought you were mine” she winced
“I thought you were a secret” I ignored the you were mine part
“It´s… it was like some kind of cult, Josh, the closer to the higher ups, the more things they knew, if they drove me, they were trusted, if they got to see me and know who I was they both knew I could kill them easily… most didn’t know exactly it worked but if they knew how I looked like they´d seen it happen…”
“You could´ve told me all that…” I remembered being scared to death with the creepy man, she shook her head
“It had to end, I couldn’t say much, let Nat know anything”
“Were you still debating, knowing who I was?” I said bitterly
“I was sure I didn’t want to end your life… I debated giving you the journal but I hoped to spare you the knowledge” she said, I scoffed
“Didn’t trust me with the information?” I said, she frowned
“It… talked about Alexander, the man you loved like a father. It talked of your little girl, how she was real and you´ve been made to believe she was not…” she trailed off, she was right, that little book had destroyed all my trust in my grandpa, he was, had been a twisted man, he´d lied to me and everybody but was it really better to live in the fantasy that he was angel like, savior of my life, good family man? I guess I wasn’t the one to talk; I had and still have the resolve to never tell Aaron or my family about it, the truth about him. I had decided to let them mourn and remember the man that my grandpa had been, the one we all thought he was but that he hadn´t been. I could understand this part. I was doing the same. I nodded

“When you left… -Nichole continued, slow, quiet and reluctant- I wanted to know the truth from Nat, I was… I think I was going to kill her but she told me something that only Alexander could confirm and that was why I knew, once Karl and Alexander were dead that she wouldn’t hurt you, she wouldn’t shoot you” she addressed my accusation back in her apartment
“I don’t think that woman´s word is reliable” I spat, anger doubled
“No, but in a very wrong way she´s always been planning to… eliminate those who she thought wrong me and her, in a very twisted way… she´s wanted to keep me close –she looked down- to harm you then would’ve been to lose me”

“To lose you? You’re speaking of her as if she loved you, the woman that sent you to kill people, that kidnapped your friend to manipulate you, that traced all your calls, that lied to you, that didn’t let you see your sister, that stabbed you when you were a child –I had leaned in closer as I said and steadily raised my voice making myself stop when I heard my own voice echoing in the room- Do you have some kind of … do you have one of those Nightingale or Stockholm kind of syndrome?”
“I am very stupid, I know –she sounded sad- and I’ve asked myself countless times if I have one of those syndromes you´re saying but she really didn’t want to lose me, I´m not saying it´s love more like –she bent until her face touched her knees, she inhaled deeply- more like a pathologic sense of belonging… I might have it too” she said slowly going back to her prior position, I stared
“Do you love this woman? Is that why you keep her around?” I had stood up by now, it was so wrong.
“No –her quiet voice got a little louder and then back to normal-, I don’t. I wanted to kill her, she´s… one of the few that I´ve wanted to but I really didn’t want to kill another parent and keeping her close is safer than letting her plot somewhere I can’t see”
“Another parent? She´s not your mother” I growled
“Yes, she is”
“What? –I sat, this was bad, she was…ill- your mother´s dead”
“In a way both Miriam and Natasha are my mother”
“What are you talking about?” this was bizarre, too crazy, she was saying crazy things, it was not coherent but something told me she was telling the truth, maybe I was crazy too for believing her. I knew she was trained to do certain things; maybe she was using her training to trick me.
“Do you remember Ibsen said Miriam was a… donor, as was Karl –I nodded- they were going to have an in vitro so… -she trailed off- you know how that works… -she shook her head, of course I knew, many fertilized eggs are implanted, multiple pregnancies are more likely… I made a motion for her to continue- Nat was also a volunteer, both Miriam and Nat got implanted fertilized eggs, Miriam children. Nat´s baby was born first, a couple days later Miriam´s baby was born, Miriam´s died… The crew, the head of the crew –she avoided saying Alexander´s name- took Nat´s child and gave it to Miriam because they wanted to keep Miriam in the project, both children were girls, one a couple of days older… Natasha was actually the one who named me Nichole…”

“Are you saying you´re Strasberg’s kid? Do you believe her?”
“That’s why I was at Alexander´s… that time, so he could prove it”
“He wouldn’t have proved it if you asked” I wasn’t like him but if I had been him I wouldn’t have done anything for her
“He thought I didn’t know. I pretended that when he said it… it looked like it had been the first time, I pretended that it had hurt me to know I wasn’t Miriam’s daughter –she stopped talking and started breathing in and out as she blinked a couple of times, it did hurt her even now- I didn’t…I really didn´t have to pretend that much…”
“He could´ve lied to make a point, to hurt you” he was a good liar; he´d fooled me and all my family.
“I know but he showed me papers, proof, pictures… then later, before the funeral Nat showed me this…DNA sequence, I don’t know, the eggs implanted in her… well some genes were not Karl or Miriam´s but Nat´s… so even if she actually lied about giving birth to me, even if Alexander did it just to hurt me and faked the proof… blood doesn’t lie, I have something of hers in me, besides being mental and a terrible person” her voice faltered and a stream of tears stained her face, she angrily cleaned them with the back of her hand. She seemed sad, it touched me but if I were her I wouldn’t want to be related to that woman, to have her near like she did, to me it is awful to be related to Alexander… to hear that I am the spitting image of him when he was young.

“You didn’t have to leave me with her, with two dead bodies” I couldn’t erase that image from my head despite her tears. In my head I could still see the blood staining the carpet, the wooden floor, I could still feel my heart pounding hard against my chest, the fear of being the next dead body, the worry of being left alone with the woman who had kidnapped and hurt me without consequence. It had been the worst experience of my life, maybe the second worst after drowning and then even that related to all of it making it even worst… one huge nightmare. For a minute, as I thought about it, it was like I was there again, my back against the bookshelf as the afternoon fell and the wind picked up. The bushes outside the window brushed and hit the glass; that had brought me back. She hadn’t said any other word.

“Do you have any idea of what I went through? -I shouted and half stood up, she closed her eyes and still didn’t say a word- Why? –I shouted, the wind made it sound less than what it was- why did you leave me alone? Ignored? Forgotten? Why?” I hardly ever shouted. I did it a lot that day. Her head hung down.

“You had seen me –she said in a quiet voice- the monster I had been hiding, you were going to see more of it with that journal. The only life I ever saved, the only one that thought I wasn’t just some weapon or experiment or asset or belonging would see what I really was, what monster I really am…” it was as if when she let her tears fall freely the sky also cried, it poured, wind throwing the heavy and sudden raindrops against the window. Rain was the only sound after her words died. It surrounded us, swallowed every other sound.

It brought back memories.

I wanted to keep shouting, to say that was stupid, that I was never given the opportunity to react, to say something about the whole thing; that it was unfair I was a prop for how it all was planned. That it was unfair that I had to lie so that the whole thing looked like it had been thieves when I had seen and heard exactly what had happened; that I had no one to talk about it, that I had been treated like a pariah, as if I was being punished, pointed out that I had been the cause and that it all made my nightmares worse as she was freaking partying in Europe with Vincent of all people and….

“Fuck! –I shouted- why did it have to rain tonight?!” I sagged on the chair. That night, three years ago, when I was back home, after witnessing death thinking I´d die next; being abandoned with a psycho; learning my beloved grandpa was another psycho that was basically some kind of Frankenstein, that my best friend was actually an experiment and an assassin; after having lied to the police about the events it had rained, hard, long and I had been paralyzed, had a panic attack, one of the worst after so many years of keeping it more or less under control. I hadn’t been able to breathe to the point that I passed out and as I had fallen to the floor my brain had fed me images of my nightmares, of the pain that had been to drown, to die. I had found out I had died, was I who I had been before that? Would I be different if it hadn’t happen? I wondered…until it was all darkness.

And it happened again in that ghostly house...  I started to feel my throat closing, my heart beating faster. I could hear my ragged breaths. The lack of air was painful. The memories hurt me. Everything crashed and fell on me and I was in deep waters. I tried to focus, it wasn’t real, it was just rain, I wasn’t in the pool, I wasn’t being pointed with a gun by my grandpa, I wasn’t falling. I told myself I could control it. I had forgiven and forgotten… I tried to tell myself so many things, to put order to my thoughts, to rein my emotions, to stop my memories but in a second only one thing mattered. I had only one thought: I was in the pool and the water burnt my lungs.
I…
 Couldn’t…
 Breathe.

Air…

Air, I needed air. Air...

safe place

Ayon was here. Random huh?
I thought this day was not going to come, not again,
there you were
saying I miss you one day, and then not replying again
days later, you appear, telling me of your latest interest
someone that makes you curious and sad because she seems to run away from you
and you want my advice, you want my confort
and I will confort you as you pierce my heart, all over again
as  I realize again that you never looked my way
except as your safe place where you could hide for a moment before trying the world again.

Through My Eyes: Down the rabbit hole

A/N: nothing much happens in this one... yet it´s taken me forever to post it. Never again I´m going over the posts twice!! >_< specially bc I´m sure there´ll b a lot of mistakes even if I did...
*****

This was a bad day, a day I hated.

Last year it had been a Thursday.

It had been the two year mark.

I don’t think I had ever been so drunk, except perhaps the year before.

“I won’t pick you up” Aaron had said when he called me earlier; he’d done so the year before. If I needed it, he would do it again. We both knew that.
“It won’t be necessary” I had said and I hoped it wouldn’t be. I’m not unpredictable but I get my moments….

Last year it had been a Thursday and this year it was a Friday. Marissa had asked me a couple of days before to come to their movie night again which had sounded like a good way to distract myself and I wasn’t in the least opposed to the cuddling that I knew we’d be doing afterwards, like it usually happened … although I had wondered if it was actually a good idea or a good distraction considering the other person that was going to be there, even with that thought in mind, I hadn´t cancelled and on that Friday, there I was…

I sighed and reached to knock on the door; before I could do it, the door opened.
“What are you doing here?” Nichole had her backpack on.
“Well, hello, nice to see you too –I raised my eyebrow- Marissa asked me to come”
“I didn’t think you’d come- she opened the door the full way to let me in- Marissa’s not here, it’s early” she walked inside to the coffee table where she had her keys
“Leaving before I came?” I sounded angry.  She raised both eyebrows.
“Like I said, -she put emphasis on the words- I didn’t think you’d come”
“You’re not staying?” I asked. She was already on her way out.
“No, but you can wait here for her”
“Why are you always in such a hurry to leave?” I sat on the armchair.
“I have somewhere to go”
“Away from me…” I said dryly, she stared at me for a moment.

“Are you…? – I thought she was going ask if I was ok but she knew I was not. She knew why I wasn’t ok.
“I´m going to see Camille -Nichole said instead of finishing her question- It´s… not a good day for her” she explained. Of course not, today not only I had lost loved ones.
“Not a good day” I repeated
“Yeah, that’s why I thought you wouldn’t come. I thought you’d be with your family” she was talking more than usual. It was like a contrast between our moods. She was right though, that day my family was together and they wanted me to be there with them….

“…Mourning a jerk….” I finished my thoughts out loud with a scoff; she seemed startled by my words.

“How do you do it? –I furrowed my eyebrows and shook my head- how do you do to not feel anything?” I scowled and the minute I said it I knew it was unfair but I just couldn’t stop myself. Her eyes turned glassy but she blinked once and it was as if I had imagined it, it went away as fast as if it had never happened.
“That’s how I am” she didn’t meet my eyes but her use of that monotone made me angry.
“Why did you leave?” I asked. Now that I look back in time it was almost out of nowhere and with no context, I don’t know how I expected her to know what I was talking about but of course, she knew. At the time she just stared.
“I really have to go” it was as if she hadn’t heard my words but of course she’d decided to ignore them. I laughed humorlessly.
“Of course, you always have to go –I sighed- that’s who you are, always leaving, not feeling… great, you should teach a course on that…” my jaw clenched.
“Do you really want to be talking of this, now? Here? You´re obviously not doing well, Mari will come any minute now if she asked you to come and I have to be with Camille” her voice was unaffected, as if my words hadn’t had any meaning to her.
“If you just answered at once you could go away like you always do” I felt angry. I knew she made sense, in any other day I wouldn´t have started this knowing that I wasn´t feeling well and that Marissa would come soon. She shook her head no

“Tell me why you left me to deal with two dead bodies and a murderer! I deserve to know!” I stood up as I raised my voice. She looked like she was worried about people hearing, she scratched a spot on her forehead and then combed her hair with her hand
“Yes, I owe you answers, I know –she took a couple of steps towards me, her hands raised in a calming gesture, her voice leveled, calmed- ….but right now…”
“I want to know now, I don’t want to wait anymore!” my voice getting louder than what I intended not that I had intended to raise my voice though. She squeezed her eyes shut and touched her forehead again.

“I can’t stay and you obviously can´t either -she maintained her calmed, infuriating tone-, what will Marissa make of you? I´m not blaming you –she cut in before I said anything and then sighed- you should go home… have some rest –she looked at my eyes… yeah, she had noticed the marks of my sleepless nights- I´ll go to you later and give you your answers”

“No –I shook my head, I knew she wouldn’t honor that, besides I was tired of waiting and giving her space- just say you let your assassin to do your dirty work” I spat. She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply
“You’re coming with me –she said barely opening her mouth once she opened her eyes- can you, please, behave around Camille – she pleaded, her voiced changed, it startled me, was it a rehearsed one? Was it real? - she doesn’t know…” Nic motioned between us. She threw me on a loop, my eyes were wide and I had just registered that she was taking me to where she was going with her sister; that was crazy. I said nothing

“Let´s go…” she went to the door and my feet, without me followed her. I grimaced at this, always following her. It was not a good day.

“Where did you park your car?” she asked once we were in the elevator.
“I walked” I said, she had a little crease between her eyebrows as if that confused her but it was only a ten minute walk from campus.  After that little crease disappeared she raised an eyebrow, probably because that would have meant me walking back home at after one am and I didn’t live ten minutes away from them… although I would´ve probably stayed with Marissa, like I had done a few times.
“Good” she walked towards a silver car, an ordinary car, new but not what she could’ve had. She got in, threw her bags on the back seat. I kept my backpack on the floor, at my feet. We left.

I was too flabbergasted to say anything at this point which was inconsistent the outburst I had before. She was all business.
“Let Marissa know you won’t be there… if you can don’t tell her you’re with me, that’d… be hard to explain” she kept her eyes on the road, I nodded
“Just not now –she said when I took my phone out. Why did my hands do what she said? I just furrowed my eyebrows- at what time did she ask you to meet her?”
“Four” I replied, I saw her glancing me from the corner of her eye.
“It’s too early, it’d be strange and she’d probably would want to see you if you tell her you´re not going right now” she explained. I glanced at the clock on the dashboard, it wasn’t two pm yet, movie night was usually at seven or eight; Marissa had suggested we should meet a little earlier but... I totally hadn’t been thinking when I went to their apartment. I nodded again.

“We´re going to meet Camille –Nichole spoke again after a while in silence, she sounded tense- at her school, we’ll go home to get her a change of clothes, then we´ll go to a flower shop –she shrugged a little- after that we´re meeting her mother and possibly her sisters at the graveyard where Karl is –she explained, I noticed she didn’t call him father like she used to… but then I didn’t call Alexander grandpa anymore either- it´s likely that Natasha will be there too, you don’t have to get out of the car if…”
“Why are you still with that woman?!” my anger resurfaced. I couldn’t understand how she still associated with someone that she feared before.  She sighed twisting her mouth.
“Not now, please, we’re ten minutes away from Mii, you and I need to calm down. I know I don’t have the right to ask you to be civil with my sister but … -she swallowed- I couldn’t think of another faster way to… give you what you want today… you’ll still have to wait though…”  there was a heavy silence after that. I breathed in deeply and nodded once. Of course I’d be nice to her sister, it was not her fault, she didn’t even know.

“After spending some time at the graveyard, we´ll go to dinner –she shrugged- I´ll make sure Nat doesn’t go. Do you mind Ash and Jess?” she looked at me for the first time, I shook my head, they were not my favorite people but they were ok.
“Are you friends with them now?” I asked and she shook her head

“They probably won’t go but ….-she trailed off- after dinner, you, Camille and I will drive to Crystals house, where you had your party, do you remember? –I nodded- Do you have anything to do tomorrow morning?”
“Why?”
“So that I can bring you back tonight or early tomorrow or have someone bring you back” she said and I didn’t like the have someone bring me back part, it reminded me of the time I had been kidnapped by one of her people
“I will take a cab” I said, she nodded her agreement.
“I expect Mii to fall asleep quick… We´ll talk then” she blinked and looked out her window for a second. I was angry still but at that point I was starting to feel remorseful. I didn’t have to shout, I didn’t have to pry in her little sister’s pain and I had waited for a while I could´ve waited for a couple of hours without having to tag along.
“I…” I was about to tell her I’d take a cab back, we were about 45 minutes away from school now.
“We’re here” she said before I could say anything, she unbuckled herself  “I´ll be back in a moment” she got out of the car and walked towards the school, a private one of modern buildings and green lawn all the way to the entrance.

After a few minutes she came back with Camille in her uniform. The little girl had grown up, of course, it had been about three years since I had seen her, she´d have to be about eleven now. She was taller and like a younger version of her older sister, they were startlingly similar, even their walk was similar except Camille´s was relaxed. I doubted she’d been taught to walk like that. Nichole carried her little sister’s backpack as one of her hands rested on the younger girl´s shoulder. Camille’s hair was a little messy, at least a difference from her older sister that never seemed to have a hair out of place.

Once they were closer I got out of the car. Camille didn’t seem surprised; I guessed Nichole had told her I was there. I tried to compose myself.
“Mii, do you remember Josh?” Nic asked, the younger girl nodded and smiled a small smile
“Hello, Josh” she still had her cheerful tone, dulled, I guessed by what the day represented
“Hello, Camille – I smiled- I hope you don’t mind my intrusion” I said apologetically, she shook her head, her eyes going glassy, Nichole pulled her closer to her side.
“It´s ok, it´ll be ok” Nic stroked her sister´s back
“I´m sorry” the little girl said to me
“Don’t worry… I get it” I tried to smile but I couldn’t
“Josh´s grandfather was the other gentleman that was with father…” Nichole explained gently, Camille stared at her sister and then at me
“I´m sorry for your lost” she said, came to me and hugged me tight. My eyes were wide open at that; it took me a second to hug her back
“I´m sorry for your lost, too” I said once she let go, I had the strange sensation that I meant it, despite being about a man who had planned my whole family´s death
“Are you guys ready to go?” Nic intervened; I moved away to let Mii have the front seat but she didn’t let me… The little girl had been raised to be friendly. Her ways were so contrasting with Nichole´s but then their lives had been the opposite as well so I guessed it made sense.

“Maybe we can visit Josh´s family… or something” Mii said after a little while in silence, Nic opened her mouth but no sound came out.
“Don’t worry –I said, looking back at her- it´s not close but thank you” I smiled and she smiled a weak smile too.

We drove back, well part of the way back, ten minutes back from where Camille’s school was, to a building of expensive apartments, doorman and everything... The three of us took the elevator to the third floor. Home, Nichole had said, we’ll go home, so I guessed this was where Camille lived.

“Did you bring my dress?” Camille asked as Nic unlocked the door
“Yes and an extra one” she opened the door, Camille got in first, then Nichole motioned for me to get in. The place said Nichole everywhere, unlike her place at school, this was how I had imagined hers and Marissa´s place.

Both the wall against which the door stopped and the one that made up the back of the living room had shadows of trees painted as if trees were somewhere close, the wall on the left side was completely made of glass from where I could see a terrace where plants hung from the ceiling, casting shadows to the black furniture.

“Have a seat –Nic told me as Camille disappeared in one of the rooms. - do you want anything to drink?” who was this woman?
“Ah…” I sat
“Oh, but there’s just water, I didn’t bring anything else” a small crease formed between her eyes
“Water´s fine” I said, she’d sounded nervous. She left to the kitchen.
In front of the couch where I sat, the one opposite the front door, there was a cabinet with a TV and books on top. Over the cabinet, on the wall, there was a large painting, I knew it, well, kind of, it was the picture of a ballerina, I had seen a child ballerina on a page in Burgeoys; this was the same except the ballerina was older. It was Camille dancing. To my left I could see the dining table, it was made of dark wood, behind it, a cupboard of the same dark wood and the wall on the other side had some painting that I could make up from that angle. Nichole came back with the glass of water.

“I´m going to change, I´ll be right back” she said and I stayed there drinking the water and staring at the glass. I had fallen in the rabbit hole, I wasn´t sure who was who.
Nichole really came back quick, didn’t take more than ten minutes. She’d been wearing blue jeans, a t-shirt with a shirt over it, a beanie, her usual boots; her usual outfit. She came back still wearing jeans except that they were black, a ¾ sleeve blazer, a gray top under it and formal shoes.

“Do… do you live here?” I felt a little stupid asking this but it didn’t seem like anybody else lived here, there weren’t things that could belong to anybody else, although I had only seen the living room and part of the dining room.
“Yeah…” she breathed out
“I thought you lived with Marissa…”
“I come here when she has company or during the weekends that I spend with Camille”
“This is your house –I said stupidly, she nodded a little mortified. I didn’t think she ever intended for me to know about that place. I wondered if Marissa knew about it- since when have you lived here?”
“Well… I haven’t lived here for more than a couple of weeks at a time…”
“But you always returned here”
“Yeah… It´s close to Mii’s school and home”
“You didn’t have it before…” I said sure that I would´ve known but maybe I really didn’t know her at all.
“I didn’t have a thing before –she smiled a sad smile and I guessed now that it probably had to with being the heiress of her father, that, I was sure of. Another thought came to me, it meant she’d been 30 minutes away for the last two years; no, it was three years on that day.
“You´ve been 30 minutes away all this time” I said almost to myself, she opened her mouth to talk but Camille came, she was wearing a black dress and a hairband and a sad expression.
“I´m ready” she announced, Nic nodded, I stood up noticing that they were now dressed up and I was not. At least my jeans were dark and the shirt that I wore over my dark green t-shirt was black as well. I was wearing sneakers…I looked down at myself.
“You´re fine like that” Nichole told me as she motioned for us to leave.

According to what Nichole had said we went to a flower shop. Camille did most of the talking.
“What do you think of this one?” she showed Nic a wreath of white flowers
“I like it” Nic replied
“Can I choose another?”
“As many as you want, Mii” we walked behind Camille who observed and smelled the flowers before picking anything
“Pick something for your mom” Camille instructed Nichole
“A bouquet of white Casablanca lilies, please” Nic said to the florist

“Why don’t we send some flowers for Josh´s grandpa?” the little girl tilted her head as she asked her sister, she had a sweet voice
“Sure, baby, pick something” Nic seemed startled at first but it seemed she didn’t say no to her little sister
“Josh, what do you think your grandpa might like?” Mii came closer to me, took me by my arm, it was my turn to be startled, the sisters were nothing alike.
“Well… I don’t think he had a favorite flower” I told Mii
“Ah, do you have a preference?” she asked and I wanted to chuckle
“No, I don’t really have a preference, do you?”
“I like roses and gardenias but I think… I don’t know about roses…”
“How about this one?” I pointed to one with white flowers and bright green leaves, it had some sort of a cross shape.
“That´s pretty” she smiled to me “Nic, this is the one for Josh´s grandpa”
“I like it” she said as we all went to pay for the flowers
“Mii, why don’t you help me with the lilies? Josh and I will take the others as soon as he tells us the address, ok?”
“Yeah, write something nice on the card and sign both our names” the little girl took the car keys and left us.
“Sign your name, please … -Nic said- we don’t have to send them if you don’t want though…”
“It´s ok… -I signed the card, I knew Nic wouldn’t sign her name on it or her sisters- I´ll pay for these” I said, she shook her head
“It´s a gift from Camille… please, accept it” she asked, I nodded, feeling somewhat numb. The little girl brought out a different Nichole. I had seen how much she loved her, how she spoke about her but I guess after seeing a harder side of her behavior stood up even more.

At the graveyard I didn’t want to get out of the car, my stomach twisted and all I could see in my mind was Alexander shooting Karl and Natasha shooting Alexander dead…Nichole leaving me the journal, blood and gunpowder smell. I felt like puking but I pushed it away as I walked slowly behind the two girls. Nic carried the wreath and a bouquet, Mii carried another.

As Nichole had told me, there was Karl´s widow, I recognized her even if I had met her only once, she wore black as well and didn’t really seemed so hurt, next to her there were also Nichole´s step sisters, Jessica and Ashley, they recognized me at once.
“Josh!” both girls said at once and came to hug me, gave me a kiss on the cheek “long time no see!” Jess said
“We missed you!” one of the sisters added cheerfully, I only nodded and smiled, this was the graveyard not a catch up meeting, their cheerfulness seemed out of place to me but I wasn’t at my best so I can´t be sure about my assessment of how cheerful they actually was. Behind them and now next to Karl´s widow, was Natasha Strasberg, she saw me and glanced at Nichole who gave her a look of “don’t say a word”
“Sheryl, this is Joshua Arlington” Nichole introduced me to her step mother
“Arlington…” she furrowed her eyebrows as if trying to make the connection
“Mom –one of her daughters said- remember we went to his party, daddy introduced us once, Mr. Erick Arlington is his dad” they were too cheerful for the occasion
“Oh, yes, I remember you now” Sheryl had Ashley´s smile or maybe it was Jess´ smile “Thank you for joining us”
“You´re welcome…” I didn’t say I was sorry for their loss, I was not.

The two sisters, Nichole and Camille went closer to the place where Karl was, Camille placed the flowers. I noticed Nichole placed only one of the white lilies, bending quickly and stranding up as quickly while Camille knelt down, after a few minutes, Sheryl and her daughters joined them placing the flowers they had.

“Joshua Arlington” Natasha stepped closer to me “I didn’t think I´d see you again” at this Nichole´s head turned to a side as if she´d heard, Natasha smiled her creepy smile
“I didn’t want to see you either”
“Are you and my girl back together?” she raised one of her perfect eyebrows
“Shut up, Natasha” without our notice Nichole had come back. Strasberg looked hurt
“I´m just asking” Natasha replied in that sweet tone she had, I wanted to puke, or to punch her, she´d used that tone as she either hit me or pointed a gun at me
“You´re not coming to dinner” Nichole told her
“Sheryl invited me, Nicky”
“I couldn’t care less”
“But Nicky….I haven’t seen you…” she seemed sad
“No, you´re not coming” Nic shook her head as she interrupted her, the woman looked wounded, then looked at me, looked back at Nic and closed her eyes for a moment, she sighed and went back to her creepy smile, so fast, so easy.
“Ok” she sighed and walked to the others. Like Nichole she only had one flower that she let fall to the grave from where she stood. I stared at her from where I was several feet away. Nic had said she´d make sure Natasha didn’t come, she´d been quite blunt and rude but I couldn’t feel any sympathy for the woman

After a while they came back to where Nic and I were. Strasberg said goodbye. Jess and Ash announced they´d join us for dinner. Nichole sighed.
“So, Josh, what you´ve been up to?” one of Nichole´s stepsister asked. We were not in a restaurant; our orders had just been taken
“I´m in school”
“Oh, what are you studying?”
“I’m in med school”
“A doctor, how cool” one of them said, I smiled
“How´s your twin?” a hint somewhere in her voice
“He´s fine, thanks”
“We´ve got to get together to catch up” one said, not sure now which one, they were similar when they acted this way, finding opportunities to touch my hands or arms, my knee even.
“Sure” another smile from me

“I want dessert” Jess said to Sheryl
“I don’t want to get to Crystals house too late –Nic said, it was surreal that we were eating with these people that hated her before, maybe they had changed too- so Mii, if you don’t mind we´ll skip dessert”
“Can we have it to go?” the little girl said
“Sure” Again, Camille didn’t get a no for an answer. They ordered their desserts
“Josh, Josh” I heard my name, I hadn’t noticed I wasn’t listening
“Yeah?” I looked at Nic
“Want anything?” she asked. I furrowed my eyebrows. Where was I?
“No, thanks” I didn’t want dessert, I just wanted to get out of there

“We can give you a ride home” Ash or Jess offered
“Nichole´s taking me, thanks” I declined
“Ah, I bet she wouldn’t want to have to detour…” one of the sisters said
“He´s coming to Crystals house, Ashley” Nichole replied, the three women gasped and stared at me, then Camille´s mom stared at Nichole
“Don’t worry” Nic said to the woman who narrowed her eyes but when Nichole glared she looked away with a huff, she asked for the check; when it came, Nichole placed the money on the tray they waiter had brought, the money for the other women too. So she paid for them now, were they… a family now? Nichole was that forgiving with people that had actually hurt her? Probably, after all I had also heard she´d been traveling with Vincent… but of course, neither of these people had given her the ability to kill people, I had…
“My…” I took out my walled, Nichole shook her head

“I´ve got it, let´s go” she stood up, Camille did the same and I followed them. Camille said goodbye, hugging and kissing her mother and waving to her other sisters, I just waved.
